Australia Day has got to be one of the best summer days of the year! BBQ’s, beaches, boats and buns – what more could you want?! But before you go grilling for your party goers next Thursday, here are some healthy food and drink recipes to keep your Australia Day from blowing out.
1. Alternative Fillers and Buns
So you’re not a meat eater on Australia Day (Gasp!!!) Don’t fear because there are plenty of options out there for you… try a delicious (and vegetarian) beetroot or portobello and peach burger! But if it’s just the bun that is your concern try to opt for sprouted-grain or whole grain over plain white. If you really find yourself down struggle street with this, grab your nearest lettuce leaf and wrap that hotdog up for a crunchy, healthy alternative.
2. Swap Beer or Alcopops for Cold Pressed Cocktails
Pre-mixed alcopops can be riddled with artificial flavours, colors and sugars. We suggest picking up some juices from your local Cali Cafe and checking out some of the delicious cocktail recipes we made over Christmas. Not only are they super delicious but also our cold pressed juice is so good for you too! Just because you and friends are indulging a little, doesn’t mean you have to compromise your New Year resolutions (if you’re anything like us) entirely!
3. Wholesome Snacks
Who doesn’t love a good tortilla chip and some dip? So make the switch to organic, non-GMO good stuff that comes in a variety of natural, beautiful colours – like blue corn, or corn with beet – serve this up with a healthy home-made guacamole! And if you’re feeling extra peckish – try throwing together this ridiculously tasty Vegan Nacho recipe.
4. Unconventional Condiments
A lot of healthy peeps tend to just skip the sauce, but we say why miss out on all that fun! Move aside conventional tomato sauce and mayonnaise, grab your mini muffin tin and throw in pesto, kimchi, sauerkraut, homemade hummus, salsa and organic plain mustard. We guarantee your guests will be so into these unfamiliar yet surprisingly tasty stars of the muffin tin, it’ll need refilling, fast!
