More and more science is pointing towards the importance of gut health and many medical practitioners have reason to believe that human health (and illness) starts and ends with the gut.
“The power of healing is within you. All you need to do is give your body what it needs and remove what is poisoning it. You can restore your own health by what you do — not by the pills you take, but by how you choose to live.”
– Terry Wahls, The Wahls Protocol: How I Beat Progressive MS Using Paleo Principles and Functional Medicine
Female modern medicine pioneer, Dr. Terry Wahls managed to defeat Multiple Sclerosis by researching the complexities of good gut health. In the process, Wahls also developed a diet called the ‘Wahls Protocol’, which has seen numerous people combat illness by maintaining a healthy gut. Check out some of her great tips below on how you can reset your gut health:
SAY GOODBYE TO GMOS
You already know that GMOs are a no-no, but what you may not know is that they have the ability to wreak terrible havoc on your gut. For example, there is evidence that exposure to GMOs can increase the risk for gluten intolerance (which manifests itself as various gut-disturbing ailments). If you opt for only whole and organic products you’ll avoid GMO exposure.
EAT YOUR PROBIOTICS
Fibre isn’t only just the magic solution for constipation. It helps to remove toxins, it keeps things moving and it protects your digestive tract from inflammation, injury and disease. An added bonus of fibre is that it can curb your appetite by helping to keep you feeling full.
GET TESTED FOR FOOD ALLERGIES
Food allergies can lead to inflammation in all areas of the body, especially in your gut. You can try the elimination method with certain foods you suspect, to see if that clears up your digestive issues but it may also be worth getting an allergy test done by your doctor.
